One of the first things that people want to know when you talk about the history of the Adidas brand is where the name came from. Adidas trainers were first produced by hand in 1920 on the kitchen table of Rudolph and Adolf (Adi) Dassler and at that time were marketed under the Dassler name. The Olympic games in Amsterdam in 1928 saw their trainers used for the first time in an International competition, but by the time of the Melbourne Games in 1956 they were being marketed under the Adidas name.
Adidas are the first company to get into sports sponsorship and by 1961 Adidas had branched out from trainers into other things such as clothing and footballs. By the 1964 games in Tokyo an astonishing 80% of all athletes were using Adidas footwear which now also made the familiar three stripes logo a recognised global trademark. The trfoil logo which accompanies the three stripes represents the coming together of the continental plates in recognition of the spirit of the Olympic games, and was introduced in 1972. In the same year, West Germany won the European football Championship and the team were all kitted out with Adidas boots. The German football team continued their success and went on to win the 1974 World Cup. At that competition, over 80% of all footballers from all participating coutries wore Adidas boots, and in 1976, an astounding 83% of all athletes at the Montreal Olympic games wore Adidas.
The brand is simply one of the most recognised in the World and continues to dominate in all sorts of sporting disciplines, attracting endoresements from some of the World’s iconic sports personalities. David Beckham joined the Adidas marketing whirlwind in 1997 and Anna Kournikova continued to push the brand in the World of Tennis. In 1998, France won the World Cup and again the winning team was wearing Adidas boots.
